Portland - LA Galaxy Live: Timbers fall to Galaxy after Lletget screamer
Portland Timbers lost 3-1 to the LA Galaxy Saturday night at Providence Park in front of a sellout crowd of 25,218.
The reigning MLS Cup champions took an early 2-0 lead before halftime and never relinquished the lead against a Timbers side that looked lackluster at times.
Sebastian Lletget scored a golazo from outside the box in the 34th minute to give the Galaxy the lead.
Javier Hernandez doubled the lead in the 41st minute before Lletget scored his second of the match in the 71st minute to seal the victory for the Galaxy.
Despite pulling a goal back through Bill Tuiloma in the 81st minute, the Timbers were unable to complete the comeback.
The loss snapped the Timbers' three-game winning streak and dropped them to 6-6-5 on the season.
The Galaxy, meanwhile, improved to 10-5-3 and moved into first place in the Western Conference.
What went wrong for the Timbers?
There were a number of factors that contributed to the Timbers' loss on Saturday night.
First, the team looked disjointed and out of sync in the first half and were unable to generate any real scoring chances.
The Timbers also struggled to defend against the Galaxy's attack, particularly in the first half.
The Galaxy were able to create a number of dangerous chances and were able to convert three of them.
Finally, the Timbers were unable to take advantage of their set-piece opportunities. They had a number of free kicks and corner kicks but were unable to create any clear-cut scoring chances.
What's next for the Timbers?
The Timbers will look to bounce back from Saturday's loss when they travel to face the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday night.
The Timbers will then return home to host the Seattle Sounders on Saturday night.
