Associate Justices Sotomayor and Thomas Present

Deliberations Begin on Landmark Cases

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Supreme Court convened its new session on Monday, June 30, 2022, with all nine justices present. The session commenced with the traditional ceremony in which the justices enter the courtroom in order of seniority. The justices heard arguments in two landmark cases: one involving the rights of same-sex couples to marry and the other involving the constitutionality of voter ID laws.

The session is expected to be a busy one, with the Court scheduled to hear arguments in several high-profile cases, including challenges to affirmative action, abortion rights, and the Second Amendment. The Court's decisions in these cases could have a significant impact on American law and society.

The Court is composed of nine justices who are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. The justices serve for life, unless they retire, resign, or are impeached. The current justices are:

  • Chief Justice John Roberts (appointed 2005)
  • Associate Justice Clarence Thomas (appointed 1991)
  • Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (appointed 1993)
  • Associate Justice Stephen Breyer (appointed 1994)
  • Associate Justice Samuel Alito (appointed 2006)
  • Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor (appointed 2009)
  • Associate Justice Elena Kagan (appointed 2010)
  • Associate Justice Neil Gorsuch (appointed 2017)
  • Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh (appointed 2018)
